Ski patrolling, like so many other blue collar jobs, is a true meritocracy, if the merit of measure is a physical necessity and if you are at the bottom rank. It is not a meritocracy of advancement. It is a meritocracy of accountability. When the stakes are tangible and real, such as providing first aid in an inhospitable environment, or clearing a clogged shitter if you’re a plumber, you either can and want to do the job, or you can not, or do not want to.
